She was the wife of the first president to be impeached.
She neglected her duties as First Lady so her daughter Martha served as White House Hostess.
Her sons Charles and Robert became alcoholics.
Her son Robert committed suicide (1869).
She did not attend President Andrew Johnson's funeral, claiming she was ill.

Hamond's Presidents says she taught President Andrew Johnson to read and write. Firstlady.org refutes it as urban legend.
Mary Todd Lincoln had left the White House in such a disarray, congress gave her $30,000 to repair the damages.
She was an only child.
