Outlaw
    (circa 33- )
Full name was probably Jesus bar-Abbas
Member of a revolutionary Jewish movement to overthrow the Roman occupiers
Released by Pontius Pilate over Jesus Christ by demand of the people
He was probably a thief who murdered Roman soldiers.
    He was a violent revolutionary.
He incited riots against the Romans which killed many.
He was named Jesus which confuses him with Christ.
The name 'Barabbas' means 'Son of the Father.'
Some believe Pilate tricked the Jews into releasing him instead of Jesus by shouting, 'Which Jesus will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas (Godson) or bar Abbas (God's Son)?' Then, when they shouted 'God's Son' he released 'Godson' instead.
Others believe that his full name is not 'Jesus bar-Abbas' and his labeling as such was an error/misinterpretation of the scripture.
Another theory believes he did not exist.
Plot hole: The festival tradition of releasing a prisoner begged for by the crowd was never recorded outside of the New Testament and was not heard of anywhere in the Roman Empire.
Plot hole: By releasing him, Pontius Pilate was committing a crime against the Roman Empire, as Barabbas was a known murderer of Roman soldiers and opposed the Roman Empire. And wouldn't this undermine morale?
Some people argue that Barabbas and Jesus Christ were the same person as a way of filling in the plot holes.
There is no record of his life after he was released from custody (maybe he went into the witness protection program).
Some people use his case as an excuse to be anti-semitic (the Jewish establishment pushed for him to be released instead of Jesus) even though both he and Jesus were Jewish.
The crowd cheered as he was freed.
He had a unique sense of self-preservation.
If he was executed instead of Jesus, 'The Passion of the Christ' would have been about a man's love for carpentry and starred Tim Allen (and who needs more Tim Allen movies?).
He had great charisma (maybe an ancient age Kennedy?) he beat out the Son of God in a popularity contest.
He never pretended to be the Son of God or claimed his mother was a virgin.
    He fought against Roman occupation.
He was portrayed by Anthony Quinn in the movies.
He probably took shit over the whole Jesus incident for the rest of his life.
