He was an admirer of Stalin and essentially his puppet ruler.
He set up a personality cult modeled after Stalin.
He was a communist.
He had dissidents, religious figures, and former aristocrats purged.
In an attempt to increase his influence, he encouraged ethnic insurgency in China's Xinjiang autonomous region.
He was originally trained as a Lamaist (Buddhist) monk before he became a communist.

A city in Mongolia was named in his honor.
He increased Mongolia's literacy rate with breakneck speed.
He improved Mongolia's infrastructure with Soviet assistance.
