    His handlers were accused of putting chloroform on his gloves to try and blind opponent Johnny Kilbane (1912).
    He was accused of eye gouging in a fight against Jimmy Walsh, with Walsh’s manager filing charges with the New York Boxing Commission (1913).
    He retired from the ring and returned three times.
    He was a bagman for gambler/gangster Arnold Rothstein, including serving as a go-between for him and the ballplayers in the Black Sox scandal.
    When the scandal broke, he went on an extended vacation in Canada to avoid being subpoenaed.
    He began boxing at fifteen to help support his mother and siblings after his father abandoned the family.
    He defended his title a record 21 times.
    His brother Monte was the World Bantamweight Champion (1909-10), making them the first brothers to hold two titles at the same time.
