    Best known for portraying Sam Wainwright in 'It's a Wonderful Life' (1946)
    Also appeared in the films 'Words and Music' (1929), 'A Connecticut Yankee' (1931), 'Alice Adams' (1935), 'Ah, Wilderness!' (1935), 'Fury' (1936), 'Mother Carey's Chickens' (1938), 'Room Service' (1938), 'Wake Island' (1942), 'O, My Darling Clementine' (1943), 'Rosie the Riveter' (1944), 'Nightfall' (1957), 'The Last Hurrah' (1958), 'Psycho' (1960) and 'Bye Bye Birdie' (1963)
    He briefly used the pseudonym James Cruze before going back to his real name.
    He was typecast early in his career as a 'perpetual juvenile.'
    Several movie trivia books erroneously claim that he and Jack Albertson are brothers.
    He started as a prop boy before graduating into acting.
    He was a prolific and reliable character actor, with over 100 movie and TV appearances.
    His youngest daughter was killed in a car crash on the New York State Thruway (1956).
