    Born in Center Point, Texas
    Army Major General
Commander of the 24th Infantry Division (1959-61)
Target of an attempted assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald (April 10, 1963)
He was relieved of command for distributing John Birch Society propaganda to his soldiers.
He then resigned, saying he could no longer 'be a collaborator with the release of United States sovereignty to the United Nations.'
He denounced civil rights demonstrators as 'pro-Kennedy, pro-Communist and pro-socialist.'
He was arrested on federal insurrection charges for leading protests against the integration of the University of Mississippi (1962).
He was twice arrested for 'public lewdness' in Dallas restrooms (1976-77).
He led a joint Canadian-American commando team during World War II, earning a bronze star and silver star.
Despite his personal views on civil rights, he commanded the troops keeping the peace when schools in Little Rock were desegregated (1957).
He survived Oswald's assassination attempt only because the bullet struck a window frame, deflecting its path.
