    The FBI monitored his activities because of his connections with Malcolm X and other radical black leaders.
    Many of his 'fictional' works are thinly-veiled autobiographies.
    As he got older, his books got worse.
    He smoked.
    He grew up poor.
    He never knew his real father.
    His stepfather was abusive.
    He encountered racism in the U.S. and Europe.
    He helped desegregate public schools in the South.
    He died of stomach cancer.
