    Namesake for the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City
    His nickname was Oakie.
    He and his second writing partner Richard Rodgers constantly feuded.
    He wrote the lyrics for 'Sound of Music.'
    Amongst musical theatre lyric writers, he is the only one considered a poet.
    He wrote the beautiful lyrics to some of the 20th centuries greatest songs such as 'Can't Help Lovin' That Man,' 'Out of My Dreams,' 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and 'Something Wonderful.'
    He wrote 'South Pacific' as a protest against racism and prejudice.
    He was a devoted family man.
    He was the mentor of Broadway Composer Stephen Sondheim.
