    He was a Marxist who came from a privileged background.
    He unsuccessfully tried to convince Gandhi and other Indian nationalists to support the British war effort in return for a promise of post-WWII independence.
    After World War II, he implemented a series of unpopular austerity measures.
    One historian described him as 'the type of man who was easier on Stalin than on Churchill.'
    Winston Churchill said of him, 'He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.'
    He served as an ambulance driver during World War I.
    He opposed Neville Chamberlain's appeasement policies toward Nazi Germany.
    He was respected for his tireless work to improve the post-war economy.
