Why South Bend, Indiana might be annoying:

It is only really known outside of Indiana for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame isn't actually in the city, but in an unincorporated community just outside of city limits.
Outside of the university, it is pretty much a trailer trash city.
It is an industrial city that has struggled economically since World War II.
The city is littered with abandoned homes, industrial buildings and factories.
Former Indiana governor Mitch Daniels said 'South Bend appears to be stagnant and falling behind and not doing the things it needs to do.'
The city has a dark, heavy feeling to it with just 73 full sunny days per year.

Why South Bend, Indiana might not be annoying:

It is (technically) home to a great university.
Its population didn't drop as badly as other cities in the post-industrial era.
It was the home of Studebaker.
The University of Notre Dame provides a lot of jobs for the city and is their biggest employer.
Their zoo is the oldest in Indiana.
Vivica A. Fox was born here.
