    Author of ‘Eight Hours from England’ and ‘On Such a Night’
    Drama League’s Distinguished Performance Award (1971)

    Having no head for chemistry or physics, he had zero interest in the family drug business.
    His first marriage ended in divorce after about seven years.
    His two books on his war experiences were largely fictionalized.
    He had a tendency to be just as tough a guy offscreen as on.
    During WWII, he became an area commander of the Auxiliary Units in Northumberland.
    His experiences in the Royal Artillery of the British Army gave credibility to his roles as military officers, particularly compared to those who never served.
    He was a key player in the founding of the Royal Shakespeare Company, counting Richard Burton and John Gielgud among his discoveries.
    He was good friends with Alec Guinness.
    He waited some six years to remarry; his second marriage lasted more than 40 years, up to his death.
