Football Coach

The Resume

    (October 28, 1935-December 18, 2019)
Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina
Head coach of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia (1971-79)
Coached the team to a state championship (1971)
Ranked as the #2 high school team in the country (1971)
Portrayed by Denzel Washington in ‘Remember the Titans’ (2000)

Why he might be annoying:

Some of his success had more to do with sheer numbers than his coaching talent: the student body at T.C. Williams was more than twice as large as any other local high school’s, giving him a deeper pool of talent to draw on.
After he singled out specific players as being responsible for a loss and invited them to quit, the entire team walked out and refused to play until Boone apologized (1977).
He was fired following complaints from three assistant coaches about physical and verbal abuse of players (1979).
The makers of ‘Remember the Titans’ upped the drama by making his first year as head coach at T.C. Williams the year that the school integrated. (In reality, T.C. Williams had been racially integrated since its opening in 1965.)

Why he might not be annoying:

He was fired as head coach of E.J. Hayes High School in Williamston, North Carolina, after the school board told him the town was ‘not ready’ for a black coach (1969).
During the 1971 season, T.C. Williams went 13-0, with nine shutouts and a score differential of 357-45.
He was married to Carol Luck for 58 years.
During a campaign stop, Barack Obama said he was honored to meet the man who inspired a movie that ‘made men cry.’ (2008)
