Why he might be annoying:

'Leviathan' gave a philosophical justification for an absolute monarchy.
He held a rather unflattering opinion of human nature, saying that without government, all is permitted and that life is 'solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.'
He worked as a tutor for William Cavendish's family for the majority of his professional life.
He fled to France during the English civil war, believing that he would be killed or be a royalist.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a youth, he learned both Latin and Greek, and learned French and Italian as a young man.
He came from a poor family.
He is considered one of the greatest political philosophers to have ever lived.
He published a critique of Rene Descartes' dualism, advancing a materialist alternative.
