    (September 30, 1994- )
    Born in Egoryevsk, Russian Federation
    Artistic gymnast
2007 International Gymnix (debut competition, silver)
2010 world champion (two gold, three silver)
2010 European champion (one gold, two silver)
    2011 World Cup silver medalist
    2012 European team silver medalist
2012 London Olympic medalist (one gold, team silver, two bronze)
At five foot four, she is an Amazon by the standards of those in her discipline.
Though she was pleased that her father, a wrestling coach, encouraged her to take up sport, she was surprised he’d taken her to a gym rather than a rink or pool within the complex where he worked.
An interview published on her official website was titled: ‘Don’t Call Me the Next Khorkina.’
During the 2011 European championships in Berlin, she tore a ligament in her knee on her vault and wasn’t able to place in the medals.
Like McKayla Maroney and Usain Bolt, her gesture – a scowl she regards as her game face – made her a viral Olympic sensation.
She loves math and physics (‘why do plus and minus attract each other but two pluses push each other apart?’).
Many of her tweets are in perfect young English.
Her younger sister is also a gymnast; her father, a bronze medalist wrestler at the 1976 Olympics.
She does not consider herself to have any idols — though she is a fan of Nastia Liukin.
The 1½ twist and double flip combo that marks her signature dismount was named for her.
