    (January 22, 1907-December 9, 1995)
Flew across Atlantic Ocean by 'accident' (1938)
He was going to fly cross-country from New York to California, but ended up in Ireland!
Flying over water for 28 hours should have given him an indication he was going the wrong way.
When he landed in Ireland he said, 'Just got in from New York. Where am I?'
He blamed his navigational error on reading his compass backward.
Since he was an experienced pilot, American and Irish authorities didn't believe his story.
For three years he failed to get permission to fly from New York to Ireland.
He became reclusive later in life.
He was a skilled aviation mechanic who helped build Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis.
His 'mistake' brought him instant fame.
People admired his audacity and spirit.
Upon his return to New York, he was greeted as a hero and received a ticker tape parade much larger than Lindbergh's.
F.D.R said he never doubted Corrigan's story for a minute.
He gave Americans something to smile and laugh about during the Depression.
He accomplished his dream flying from New York to Ireland.
He never publicly acknowledged his transatlantic flight was on purpose.
