    As a child, he ordered his uncle to beat him with a whip if he got the wrong answers to questions.
    He couldn't decide what he wanted to do, briefly entertaining thoughts of becoming a priest or a philosopher.
    He married into a wealthy Creole family.
    He fled Mexico to protest the dictatorship of Santa Anna.
    He worked in Louisiana cigar factories while in exile.
    He exiled many conservative leaders from Mexico.
    He declared a moratorium on foreign debt payments which caused Spain, Great Britain and France to seize the Veracruz customs house (1861).
    Spain and Great Britain eventually left, but France stayed and installed Ferdinand Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico.
    After French forces left due to the U.S. using the Monroe Doctrine, he ordered the execution of Ferdinand Maximilian (1867).
    He then reduced the size of the Mexican military by 2/3rds and sent them home without pensions.
    Benito Mussolini is named after him.
    Both of his parents died before he was three years old.
    He was raised by his uncle who discouraged him from going to school.
    He eventually left his home and walked miles to get to a school so he could learn.
    He lessoned the power of the Roman Catholic Church, which had owned over half of the property in Mexico.
    He ended slavery in Mexico.
    He separated the powerful Catholic Church from state affairs.
    He was re-elected as President after the Cinco de Mayo victory over French forces.
    He said: 'Between individuals, as between nations, peace means respect for the rights of others.'
    He triumphed in both domestic and foreign wars.
    He was Mexico's only Native American president.
    He is considered to be Mexico's greatest president.
