Advocate
    (July 14, 1858-June 14, 1928)
Born Emmeline Goulden in Manchester, England
Led the struggle for a woman's right to vote in Britain (1905-1914)
In her time, she was subject to furious and passionate protests by women (and men).
She married Richard Pankhurst when she was 20 and he was 44 (1879).
At fifty-four, she went to prison twelve times (1912).
She was sent to a finishing school in Paris, France when she was fifteen.
Joan of Arc was the suffragists' mascot.
When her daughter, Sylvia Pankhurst, had an illegitimate baby, she refused to see her or her grandson.
Universal suffrage (including women's) wasn't granted until the year of her death (1928).
She married the geezer Pankhurst because he was a brilliant lawyer, selflessly dedicated to reform and they were very much in love.
When her husband died unexpectedly she was left to bring up her children alone, with no private means of support. (1898)
She was a master of public spectacle. When a suffragist was released from prison they would escort her home triumphantly in a flower-decked wagon through the streets.
Her example was followed internationally. Most notably by the United States suffragist Alice Paul.
She stood up for her beliefs of gender equality.
She founded the Women's Social and Political Union - WSPU. (1903)
During World War I, the WSPU agreed to suspend their militant activities and help the war effort.
Besides the right for women to vote, the WSPU fought for 'equal pay, for equal work, equal marriage and divorce laws, the same rights over children for both parents, equality of rights and opportunities in public service, and a system of maternity benefits.'
