Why he might be annoying:

He initially described the Native Americans he ministered to as 'wild' and 'without doctrine even in their own language'.
Despite his efforts, he was unable to prevent tensions between Spanish settlers and the Native Americans from rising.
As a result of the hostilities, the overland routes he established were abandoned upon his death.
Many of his achievements in exploration were used by the Spanish government to maintain their stranglehold in the New World.

Why he might not be annoying:

He enjoyed walking around the countryside.
He managed to earn the trust of the Native Americans he encountered in his journeys.
He refused to travel with troops because that would arouse the suspicions of Native Americans.
His expeditions proved that it was possible to travel from inland Mexico to Californian coast through the mountainous terrain.
