    (August 3, 1900-October 21, 1970)
    Teacher in Kentucky
Defendant in 'The Scopes Monkey Trial' (July 1925)
Taught evolution against the Butler Law (only creation could be taught)
A play and movie called 'Inherit the Wind' was about his famed case
He did not teach on the date his accusers claimed he taught evolution.
He taught both Creation and Evolution.
Scopes was (knowingly) only a pawn, with the plan that they lose and appeal it to the state.
Famed N.Y. ACLU attorney Clarence Darrow defended Scopes against three time presidential candidate and Christian evangelist bible thumper, Attorney William Jennings Bryan.
Scopes volunteered to be the test case for the right to teach Evolution.
Darrow wanted to lose the case so he could win on appeal; he did not want to win on a technicality (but did anyway).
Scopes was found guilty and at the sentencing, he said: 'I feel that I have been convicted of violating an unjust statute. I will continue in the future ... to oppose this law in any way I can. Any other action would be in violation of my idea of academic freedom.'
Although he lost the trial (they won on appeal but unfortunately on a technicality), public sentiment in America progressed to change after the trial, and people wanted to learn about evolution.
