    (September 7, 1939- )
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Graduate student, teaching assistant and anti-war activist in 1968
    Member of the Chicago Seven
Charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and teaching demonstrators how to construct incendiary devices
Found not guilty of both charges, but was sentenced to 2 months and 18 days in jail for contempt of court
    Contempt convictions reversed on appeal
He spent most of the Chicago Seven trial reading the I Ching.
About the only time he spoke in court was to shout ‘It’s Wye-ner’ whenever someone pronounced his name ‘Wee-ner.’
He said, ‘[The judge] charged me with contempt, which was a perfect summary of my political stance.’
Asked a few years after the trial what he was doing, he replied, ‘Lapsing back into an active obscurity.’
At a birthday part for Bobby Seale, he joked about ‘starting a new Communist Party in New Jersey’; after the comment leaked to the press, he was told that his teaching contract at Rutgers would not be renewed (1972).
He remained politically active in the 1970s and 80s, protesting against Soviet treatment of Jewish refuseniks and for increased spending on AIDS treatment and research.
He became Vice President for Direct Response at AmeriCares, a non-profit providing disaster relief and global medical assistance.
