    He had to resign from Calhoun after a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into 'unsafe and unsound' banking practices (1986).
    He was indicted for his role in helping the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) secretly acquire control of several US banks (1991).
    He was married to LaBelle David for 62 years.
    He was described as having 'the charm of an old song and dance man.'
    He popularized the phrase 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'
    Despite multiple investigations, he never was convicted of any crime.
