Why Guangzhou, China might be annoying:

    It was occupied and looted by the British during the First Opium War (1841).
    Its Thirteen Factories district was burnt by the British and French during the Second Opium War (1856).
    During a plague epidemic, 60,000 died in a few weeks (1895).
    During WWII, it was occupied by the Japanese who conducted biological warfare experiments on prisoners of war in the city.
    It suffers severe traffic congestion.
    Its taxi drivers have a reputation for dumping counterfeit bills on tourists.

Why Guangzhou, China might not be annoying:

    It has been a major port for international trade since the 8th century.
    As a result, it is known for its liberalism and tolerance of cultural differences.
    It is the birthplace of the Cantonese cusine that constitutes 'Chinese food' to most Westerners.
    It has more restaurants per capita than any other Chinese city.
    Its economy grew rapidly during the 70s due to its proximity to Hong Kong.
    As part of a campaign to reduce air pollution prior to hosting the 2010 Asian Games, 85% of its buses and taxis were converted to liquified petroleum gas.
