    She got her start at age seven, singing and yo-yoing in a talent contest. (She finished third.)
    She changed her name due to misspellings in her fan mail.
    She said of her earliest recordings, 'I sounded like a jazzed-up Alfalfa.'
    She has been married six times.
    She was born on an Indian reservation; her father was Iroquois and her mother was part Cherokee, Choctaw and Irish.
    She developed pneumonia while touring army camps during WWII and collapsed during a show.
    After refraining from speaking or singing for six months, she returned with a deeper, huskier voice that became her trademark.
    She was successful with pop, country, jazz and blues songs.
