Military Personnel

The Resume

    (February 27, 1934-March 23, 2006)
    Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho
Combat medic, 2nd Battalion, 223rd Infantry Regiment of California, 40th Division of the United States Army
Volunteered for a recon patrol at Hill 499, vicinity of Minari-gol, Korea (expedition on June 14, 1952)
Medal of Honor recipient (October 27, 1953)
    Final ranking: Staff Sergeant

Why he might be annoying:

    Oh, man, that name.
    He was a high-school dropout.
He enlisted in the Army for the sole purpose of seeing the world.
He was one of only two field medics and corpsmen – among the eight so honored (January 12, 1954) – to live to be awarded his Medal of Honor (the other died in 2012).
A combination of emphysema, Parkinson’s, and hip fracture complications contributed to his death.

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew to six feet five inches and 250 pounds — a pretty good build for the showdown with Chinese forces on Hill 499 that would be his defining moment in the military.
Coming under heavy fire by the Chinese forces, he bodyslammed one soldier, choked another, stabbed one more to death, and finished by zonking the heads of two others – no less while they were wielding bayonets – together (June 14, 1952).
He brushed off a severed nerve from a shot in the leg as no big deal (an eyeball-to-eyeball fire-fight tends to do that).
Rather than accept job offers on the strength of his war hero status, he worked his way up from janitor to chief hot cell technician at a state engineering laboratory.
A medical facility at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, was renamed in his honor (April 20, 1995).
