Producer
    (May 3, 1844-April 3, 1901)
Best known for producing the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas
Produced ‘Trial by Jury (1875),’ ‘The Sorcerer (1877),’ ‘H.M.S. Pinafore (1878),’ ‘Patience (1881),’ ‘Iolanthe (1882),’ ‘The Mikado (1885),’ ‘Ruddigore (1887),’ ‘The Yeomen of the Guard (1888)’ and ‘The Gondoliers (1889)’
Built the Savoy Theatre in London (1881)
His middle name sounded like 'doily.'
    He dropped out of college.
    He was a failed composer.
He built a grand opera house in London that was a complete bust.
    He married his secretary.
He pissed off W.S. Gilbert by making him pay for expensive carpeting in their theater.
    He wore fur.
He united W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, who went on to write many popular operas.
The two hated each other, but he managed to keep their partnership going for years.
He trusted his wife to run his company with him (very unusual for the time).
He built the Savoy Theatre in London, which still operates today.
It was the first public building in the world lit only by electricity.
One critic wrote: ‘If Gilbert and Sullivan opera was, like Moses, cradled in the reeds, then Richard D’Oyly Carte played the part of Pharoah’s daughter’ (whatever that means).
