He was arrested during a crackdown on illegal aliens in the film industry (1933) and placed on five years probation.
He was originally the director of 'Around the World in Eighty Days,' but was fired on the first day when producer Mike Todd decided he took too long to set up the cameras.
He was opposed to his daughter Mia becoming an actress.
He put his experience at sea to use in Hollywood, breaking into movies as a technical advisor to nautical films.
He volunteered for the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve during WWII, serving on anti-submarine patrols.
He was also a writer, producing a history of the papacy, a best-selling biography of Father Damien and the first Tahitian-English dictionary.
His son Michael died in a plane crash (1958).
In addition to firing him as director of 'Around the World,' Mike Todd also tried to screw him out a writing credit, since he felt the film would seem 'classier' if S.J. Perelman received sole credit.
