The show's name was taken from a cheesy 1970s song by Loggins & Messina.
Lifetime Network President, Susanne Daniels, said she wanted the program to make viewers cry.
It made some viewers cringe when the parent/child pairs danced sensual dances such as the rumba.

Why Your Mama Don't Dance might not be annoying:

The debut episode was a ratings winner for the channel.
The show appeared to heal a few family rifts.
The series gave jobs to upstart dancers and has-been hoofers, like the judges.
