Why he might be annoying:

He and John Gielgud opened in the Broadway productions of Hamlet in the same year. Gielgud got better reviews.
He hated portraying Ashley in 'Gone With The Wind.'
He smoked a pipe.
He named his daughter, Leslie Howard.
He was turned down for the role of Dr. Frankenstein.

Why he might not be annoying:

He worked for the RAF as a spy during WW II. He delivered secrets from England for France under the guise of a morale tour.
His plane was shot down by the Nazis in the Bay of Biscay.
He gave his life for his country.
He discovered Humphrey Bogart, giving him his first lead on Broadway in 'Petrified Forest' and insisted that he reprise the role in the film. Leslie Bogart, Humphrey's daughter is named in his honor.
He was a kind and elegant man.
He was George Bernard Shaw's personal choice to play Henry Higgins.
