Historians argue about whether his real name actually was Velázquez.

One of his daughters died as a baby.
Some art critics consider him the greatest portrait painter who ever lived.
He influenced Manet, Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
He was a talented architect as well as a painter.
King Philip IV liked him so much that he never let anyone else paint his portrait.
In addition to being court painter, he also had to plan large-scale ceremonies and parties for the king.
He died of exhaustion and fever after organizing the wedding of the king’s daughter.
