Why he might be annoying:

He publicly opposed serfdom, but had a daughter out of wedlock with one of the family serfs.
He lived in exile from Russia less for political reasons than because of his long-term affair with French opera singer Pauline Viardot.
He feuded with Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevski.
Tolstoy eventually challenged him to a duel (never held) and the two would not speak for 17 years.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His mother beat him.
He was imprisoned for a month then exiled to his country estate for two years after writing an obituary praising Nikolai Gogol.
His stories in 'A Sportsman's Sketches' reportedly influenced Tsar Alexander II to liberate the serfs.
Ernest Hemingway said, 'Turgenev to me is the greatest writer there ever was.'
