Baseball Player

The Resume

    (May 8, 1893-March 21, 1988)
    Born in Oakland City, Indiana
Outfielder for the Chicago White Sox (1913), Indianapolis Hoosiers (1914), Newark Pepper (1915), New York Giants (1916,1927-29) and Cincinnati Reds (1916-26,1931)
    Career batting average of .323
    268 stolen bases
Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee (1962)

Why he might be annoying:

What's with the extra 'd' in 'Edd'?
He missed spring training almost every season because of holdouts over salary disputes.
He described his hitting style as 'glorified bunting,' adding 'I only take a half swing at the ball, and the weight of the bat rather than my swing is what drives it.'
He missed the 1918 batting title because of a protest he filed over an umpire's call. His protest was upheld, resulting in a replay of the game. He had gone 2 for 3 in the original game, but went hitless in the replay.
He was thrown out of a game after taking a nap in the outfield during an argued call; when his teammates had trouble waking him, he was thrown out for delaying the game (June 8, 1920).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to Essie May Swallow for 64 years until her death.
He was left-handed, but in the minors he frequently fielded as a righty due a lack of left-handed gloves.
His 'glorified bunting' worked, as he won two batting titles (1917,1919).
He wielded a 48-ounce Louisville Slugger, the heaviest bat ever used in the Majors.
Teammate Heine Groh said, 'Eddie used to take care of the whole outfield, not just center field. He was far and away the best outfielder I ever saw.'
During the Cincinnati Reds' centennial, he was named the team's all-time greatest player (1969).
