Philosopher
    (June 2, 1740-December 2, 1814)
Birth name was Comte Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade
Wrote '120 Days of Sodom,' 'The Misfortune of Virtue,' 'Justine,' 'Philosophy in the Bedroom,' 'Juliette' and 'Conversation Between a Priest and a Dying Man'
He was supposed to be the playmate of Prince de Conde, but when he was four he fought with the prince and was sent away.
    He was a lackluster student.
When he was 23, Laure de Lauris rejected his advances and he threatened to tell her lover that she gave him venereal disease.
Throughout his first marriage, he continually visited prostitutes.
One of these prostitutes, Rose Keller, claimed that Sade chained her, whipped her, cut her and poured hot wax into her wounds, for which he was briefly imprisoned.
After getting involved in an altercation on the streets of Paris, he stabbed a horse with his sword.
He accidentally poisoned a group of prostitutes after slipping them all Spanish Fly, for which he was convicted, but he fled before he could be imprisoned.
During the French revolution, he encouraged the rioting crowd below his prison cell by using a 'pissing-tube' to amplify his voice.
In 1792, his play, 'The Suborner,' was heckled so much that the cast had to quit the production.
In 1803, he was accused of trying to molest some of his fellow prisoners.
He believed in the power of numerology.
In his last will and testament, he said of himself: '[I am] imperious, choleric, irascible, extreme in everything with a dissolute imagination the like of which has never been see, atheistic to the point of fanaticism, there you have me in a nutshell….Kill me again or take me as I am, for I shall not change.'
He was known for being one of the worst writers in the history of literature.
The word 'sadism' comes from his name.
His novels are filled with rape, murder, torture and every form of sexual debauchery imaginable.
He is said to have invented a masturbation device known as the 'paper cat,' which consisted of paper, bent pins and heather switches.
He is said to have preferred sodomy, so that he didn't have to look at the face of the person that he was having sex with.
He fought in the Seven Years War.
His mother-in-law, Mme de Montreuil had him imprisoned for years for cheating on her daughter, thereby keeping her daughter from seeing her husband for years at a time.
He was disgusted by the random and excessive executions ordered by Robespierre during the reign of terror.
After being freed from the Bastille, he served as a grand juror at many trials during the reign of terror and would almost always dismiss the charges against anyone brought before him, thereby sparing their lives.
While working as a grand juror, he was presented with the chance to get even with his mother in law, when she was charged with crimes against the state. However, he declined to use his position to get revenge and freed her.
He was sentenced to death on July 26, 1794, but spared when Robespierre lost power and was executed the next day.
The revolution cost him his entire fortune and he spent part of the late 1790's in danger of starvation.
He was imprisoned from 1803 until his death for the crime of perversion, without ever being charged or tried.
His most massive work, 'Les Journees de Florbelle ou la Nature devoilee' was burned by one of his sons without ever being published.
Shortly before his death, he tried to teach his illiterate nurse, Magdeleine Leclerc, how to read.
He made semi-important contributions to defending atheism and naturalism.
Some of the members of the 20th century surrealist movement claimed him as one of them.
