    Played for the New York Americans (1934-39) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (1939-43, 1944-46)
    NHL Rookie of the Year (1935)
    NHL scoring champion (1936-37)
    Hockey Hall of Fame inductee (1962)
    He took his nickname 'Sweeney' from former semi-pro baseball player Bob Sweeney.
    He liked the name so much, he stopped answering to his given name of David.
    He chafed at the individualism that was in the NHL.
    He threatened retirement on two occasions, before following through on it.
    He attempted to play senior hockey, but was deemed ineligible as a result of not formally retiring from the NHL.
    He was the first Russian born player in NHL history.
    He played in the first All-Star Game in NHL history.
    He scored the tying and clinching goal in the seventh game of the 1942 Stanley Cup Final, in which the Leafs came back from a 3-0 series deficit to win.
    He was traded to the Maple Leafs, in what was considered the first multiplayer trade in NHL history.
    The scoring title in the Canada West Hockey League is named in his honor.
