    (October 28, 1466-July 12, 1536)
Full name was Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus
Wrote 'The Praise of Folly' and 'Discourse of Free Will'
    His parents never married.
After both of his parents died, his extended family forced him to join a monastery rather than take care of him.
Although he was a monk, he had little desire to serve God.
The church was never happy with him.
He was a highly intelligent child.
He was an influence on both Thomas More and Martin Luther.
'The Praise of Folly' was a popular satire of its day, mocking those who abuse their power.
He was one of the most famous figures of the humanist movement.
He was the most important figure in the Northern Renaissance.
Without him, the Reformation probably would never have happened.
He was considered one of the brightest scholars of his day, with popes and kings both seeking his opinions.
