World Leader

The Resume

    (November 27, 1921-November 7, 1992)
    Born in Uhrovec, Slovak Republic
Lead Czechoslovakia during the 'Prague Spring' (1968)
Removed from office following a Soviet invasion
Following the fall of Communism, served in the Czeckoslovak parliament (1989-92)

Why he might be annoying:

He claimed that he never spoke out against Josef Stalin's purges because he did not believe the rumors he heard.
Economist Eugen Loebl wrote, 'Only men who actively supported Stalinism in Czechoslovakia remained in office during those years. In order to advance his career Dubcek approved the purge trials of the 1950s and helped to organize public opinion in favor of them.'
He exploited ethnic tensions between Slovaks and Czechs in his rise to power.
His death in a car accident inspired conspiracy theories that he was murdered. (The official ruling was that the crash was caused by hydroplaning on a wet road.)

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a member of the anti-Nazi resistance during World War II.
Shortly after taking power he announced, 'We shall have to remove everything that strangles artistic and scientific creativity.'
During Prague Spring, his government lifted press censorship and encouraged Communist Party members to challenge government policy and 'act according to conscience.'
He was embraced a symbol of democracy and freedom during the Velvet Revolution that overthrew Communism in Czechoslovakia (1989).
