    (January 29, 1939-July 27, 2011)
    Born in Fort Sheridan, Illinois
Birth name is Mary Marr Platt
Film producer, production designer, and screenwriter
Notable film credits include 'The Last Picture Show (1071),' 'Paper Moon (1973),' 'A Star is Born (1976),' 'Terms of Endearment (1983),' 'Broadcast News (1987,' 'The War of the Roses (1989),' and 'Bottle Rocket (1996)'
She divorced director Peter Bogdanovich when he left her for actress Cybill Shepherd.
In fact, the 1984 film 'Irreconcilable Differences' was supposedly based on her marriage to Bogdanovich.
Nepotism for director James L. Brooks is evident by the fact that she worked on five films that were produced by hims or his production company, Gracie Films.
She was the first female director of the Art Director's Guild.
She was nominated for a Best Art Direction Academy Award in 1984 for her work in 'Terms of Endearment.'
Her series of meetings with animator Matt Groening eventually led to the creation of the iconic animated series 'The Simpsons.'
In 1994, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award.
Director Brooks said that Platt 'couldn't walk into a gas station and get gas without mentoring somebody. Movies are a team sport, and she made teams function. She would assume a maternal role in terms of really being there. The film was everything, and ego just didn't exist.'
