Why he might be annoying
Just what kind of name is Tecumseh?
He suffered from depression.
He smoked.
He was responsible for burning Atlanta to the ground in November 1864. His troops set fire to munitions factories; railroad yards, clothing mills, and other targets that could be have been helpful to the Confederates.
His troops looted and destroyed everything in their path on the march to the sea after leaving Atlanta.
He was nicknamed the most hated man in Georgia.
At least one edition of Microsoft's Encyclopedia identifies a photo of Ulysses S. Grant as William T. Sherman.
Why he might not be annoying
His father died when he was a small child.
He graduated the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1840).
He wrote the Secretary of War, offering his services to the union for three years starting on May 8, 1861.
He never intended to burn the entire city of Atlanta to the ground.
On December 23, 1864, Sherman sent a telegram to Abraham Lincoln stating that he was presenting him the city of Savannah as a Christmas gift.
Sherman always treated the civilians in the Confederacy well, even though they all hated him.
After the Civil War, Sherman was commissioned Lt. General in the regular army, and after Ulysses S. Grant was elected president, Sherman was promoted to full general and given command of the entire US Army.
The Sherman tank is named after him.
