    He only became leader of the Conservative Party as a compromise candidate after the two leading candidates deadlocked.
    Most of the leading Conservatives of the day declined to serve in his cabinet.
    He vented his disagreements with other Conservatives by writing 'anonymous' letters to the Times of London.
    He was the shortest-serving prime minister of the 20th century.
    At his funeral, H. H. Asquith said they were burying 'the unknown Prime Minister' next to the Unknown Soldier.
    Two of his sons died in World War I.
    He was an effective speaker.
    He was the first British Prime Minister born outside the British Isles.
    He resigned as Prime Minister after developing throat cancer and becoming physically unable to speak in Parliament.
