Why he might be annoying:

He specialized in playing stereotypical drunken Irishmen.
He is the only actor to be nominated for The Best Actor Oscar and the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the same role ('Going My Way')
He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but lost the Best Actor Oscar to co-star Bing Crosby.
Because of the metal shortage during World War II, his Oscar was made out of plaster.
While practicing putting (golf) in his living room, he accidentally knocked the head off the Oscar with a golf ball.
The accident was especially ironic, since his character in 'Going My Way' said 'A golf course is nothing but a poolroom moved outdoors.'
His studio, Paramount, paid $10 for a replacement statuette.
He was tried for manslaughter just after receiving his Oscar nominations for hitting a man with his car.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was acquitted of the manslaughter charge, and the judge severely criticized the police for bringing him up on charges at all.
After the war was over, the Academy replaced his plaster Oscar with a gold one.
He is the only actor to appear in films directed by both John Ford and Alfred Hitchcock.
