Author
    (August 30, 1925- )
    Born in Paris, France, Metropolitan
    Firstborn of Jean de Brunhoff
Author and illustrator of the Babar the Elephant series (debut ‘Babar’s Cousin: That Rascal Arthur,’ 1946)
Creator of Bonhomme and Serafina the Giraffe
    Dual citizenship, French-American
He wasn’t even a teenager when his father – with two unfinished Babar works – died.
He was described as having a chalky voice.
He divorced and remarried in the same calendar year (yes, in that order).
He re-composed several legendary art pieces — with elephants in their places!
When he moved into Manhattan’s Upper East Side with his second wife, he made a point of having a monochromatic living room.
As a teenager, he was called on to add color to his father’s (deliberate!) black-and-white Babar drawings.
To maintain the integrity of the artwork, he trained himself to draw as close as possible to his father’s style.
His first marriage, in 1951, lasted well over 30 years and yielded two children.
With his first Babar book published in 1946, he upheld his parents’ literary legacy for well over six decades.
One brother went on to be a pediatrician; another became a Benedictine monk.
