    One of his trademarks was donning a sombrero after winning a fight.
    His one attempt to move up in weight class failed, as he was KOed by middleweight champion Carlos Monzon (1974).
    He co-starred in one of Santo's cheesy wrestling/horror movies (1974).

    He was nicknamed 'Mantequilla' ('Butter') for his smooth style.
    He moved to Mexico (eventually becoming a citizen) after Fidel Castro banned pro boxing in Cuba (1962).
    'Ring' magazine ranked him as the best boxer to come from Cuba.
    He was the last surviving member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame's inaugural class of 1990.
