    (August 16, 1945- )
    Born in Cincinnati, Ohio
Birth name is Roberta Sue Ficker
Member of the New York City Ballet (1960-70,75-89)
Wrote the autobiography 'Holding on to the Air' (1990)
Founded the Suzanne Farrell Ballet (2000)
She picked her stage name out of a phone book, thinking it sounded elegant.
She had an affair with New York City Ballet founder George Ballanchine, who was 41 years older than her.
Several dancers left the New York City Ballet complaining of Ballanchine's favoritism towards Farrell.
She quit the New York City Ballet after rejecting a proposal from Ballanchine and marrying fellow dancer Paul Meija (1970).
After quitting, she found it hard to get work because other ballet directors were afraid of alienating Ballanchine.
Ballanchine said, 'She is my muse' and built two dozen ballets around her.
Following successful hip replacement surgery, she defied her doctors and returned to the stage (1987).
At her farewell performance, the audience showered her with 5,000 white roses and gave her a twelve-minute standing ovation (1989).
After retiring from dancing, she coached Russia's Kirov Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet.
