    Developed a system to teach actors to 'live the part' on stage
    He had a privileged youth, coming from one of the wealthiest families in Russia.
    He adopted a stage name to keep his acting secret from his parents.
    He wore blackface to play Othello.
    He wrote, 'Young actors, beware of your female admirers! Make love to them, if it amuses you, but do not discuss art with them.'
    He inspired a lot of self-indulgent method actors.
    His first child died of pneumonia before she was two months old.
    He told actors, 'When you play a good man, try to find out where he is bad. When you play a bad man, try to find out where he is good.'
    His production of Chekhov's 'The Seagull' at the Moscow Art Theatre was called 'one of the greatest new developments in the history of drama.'
    He said of his system, 'Create your own method. Don't depend slavishly on mine.'
