Why he might be annoying
At 15, he stole his mother's checkbook, bought a Dodge Charger, and drove off to pawn three guns he stole from the family's gun cabinet.
Working as a fisherman in his 20s, he would earn $100,000 a year and blow almost all of it on booze, drugs and hookers.
In the 1990s, he and his wife were both addicted to cocaine and often used Amanda, his nine-year-old stepdaughter, as a designated driver.
There was controversy over his use of medical marijuana during dog sled races.
He has lost all but two of his teeth.
Why he might not be annoying
He and his wife kicked drugs cold turkey.
He was diagnosed with throat cancer (2001).
The operation to remove the tumor damaged a nerve, causing such severe pain in his left index finger that he had it amputated.
He, his father Dick and his half-brother Rick each won the Iditarod on their sixth attempt, wearing #13.
He is the first (and as 2013 only) person to win the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races in the same year.
He has been honored at both races as the musher who takes the best care of his dogs.
