    Senior FBI Agent who specialized in counterintelligence
    Spied for the Soviet Union and then Russia for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds
    Arrested February 20, 2001 after a tip from a Russian intelligence officer about a double agent
    Escaped the death penalty by pleading guilty to 15 counts of espionage and conspiracy
    Currently serving a life sentence without parole
    He sold US secrets to the Russians.
    Some US analysts have called him the most damaging spy in US history.
    A few other FBI agents say he did it for thrills and/or adventure.
    He compromised dozens of Russians spying for the US; some of them were executed.
    He apologized for his crimes even though he had no incentive to do so (he had already been sentenced).
    US intelligence is interrogating him for information.
    His neighbors knew him to be a family man.
