She was a lifelong Republican who ran as a Democrat over gun control.
Despite serving as a Democrat, she did not change her voter registration from Republican until 2002.
She said she was personally against the death penalty, but would not support its repeal because her district supported it.
She is personally opposed to abortion, but supports a woman's right to choose.
While being interviewed by Tucker Carlson about a provision regulating barrel shrouds in an assault weapons ban she supported, she admitted to not knowing what a barrel shroud is.

She was diagnosed as dyslexic.
After caring for her boyfriend following a car accident, she became a licensed practical nurse.
Her husband, Dennis, was killed and her son, Kevin, seriously wounded in a shooting on the Long Island Railroad by Colin Ferguson.
After the Virginia Tech massacre, the House passed legislation she co-sponsored to improve the collection of mental health information in the national database used by gun dealers for background checks.
