The Resume

    (September 8, 1830-March 21, 1890)
    Born in Taylorstown, Ohio
Served in the American Civil War (1862-65)
Major figure in the American Indian Wars, and later the Apache Wars
Fought in the Battle of Rosebud Creek, the Battle of Slim Buttes, and in the Geronimo Campaign
Principal player in the 'Standing Bear v. Crook' land rights case of 1879
Nicknamed Nantan Lupan ('Grey Wolf') by the Apache
Portrayed by Gene Hackman in 'Geronimo: An American Legend' (1993)

Why he might be annoying:

He is yet one more Civil War general with a punchline-worthy last name (Hooker, Burnside,<13512> <17964>Pickett).
His poor performance in the Battle of Rosebud Creek prevented him from coming to General Custer's aid in the Battle of Little Bighorn.
He excelled as an Indian fighter by employing former renegades as Indian scouts against their own people.
He denied Crazy Horse permission to meet with President Hayes following his surrender.
He tried to get Crazy Horse to 'sell out' and lead his scouts in containing the fleeing Nez Pearce tribe, but he refused.
He later had Crazy Horse arrested and taken to Fort Robinson, Nebraska, where he was killed in a violent struggle with soldiers (September 5, 1877).
His failure to exact a permanent surrender from Geronimo and his men resulted in him being relieved of his post and replaced with a long-time rival (who succeeded in resolving the conflict), in 1886.
His statue at Fort Omaha has him in the most effeminate pose imaginable (at least for an esteemed General).

Why he might not be annoying:

President Rutherford B. Hayes named his son after him.
He fought in the Battles of Antietam and Second Bull Run.
He had a reputation for taking a diplomatic approach to Native American land disputes.
He spent his final years speaking out against white encroachments on Indian land.
His success in the Paiute Wars on the Pacific Northwest resulted in his being personally selected by President Grant to be in charge of the Arizona Territory.
Lakota chief Red Cloud, a one-time adversary, said Crook 'never lied to us. His words gave the people hope.'
The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division is nicknamed 'Greywolf' in his honor.
