Why he might be annoying:

His nickname was 'Monty.'
He had numerous personal conflicts with US General Dwight Eisenhower.
He supposedly also had conflicts with George S. Patton.
It is sometimes said he had more respect for the German army than he had for the American army.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a master of personal publicity and managed to convince his soldiers that under his leadership would win a great victory.
He had a major role in the allied invasion of Sicily (July 1943) where he led his 8th Army steadily up the east coast of Italy until he was called home to lead the Allied armies into France in 1944.
He recommended expanding the size of the invading force and landing area at the Normandy Invasion.
He commanded all ground forces in the initial stages of the Normandy invasion, launched on June 6, 1944.
He was wounded twice in WW I.
In post-WW II years he became Chief of the Imperial General Staff and Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.
