    (61-circa 112)
    Born in Como, Italy
Real name: Gaius Plinius Caecillius Secundus
    Roman politician and author
    Nephew of Pliny the Elder
    He was a career politician.
He spent little or no time in the military, the usual Roman way to make one's name.
He did make his name in a series of trials where he successfully defended or prosecuted a string of Roman governors accused of corruption.
He successfully held a string of high government positions in the Roman Empire, including Senator, Consul, Praetor, and Governor and had a reputation for unquestioned honesty.
Many of his letters have survived and have given us a priceless view of the Roman world.
He knew or worked with many of the great men of his time, including the historian Tactius, Emperor Trajan and the biographer Suetonius.
He was with his uncle, Pliny the Elder during his rescue mission to Pompeii after the volcano exploded.
His description of the explosion was so well-done and detailed that modern vulcanologists call that type of explosion a Plinian explosion in his honor.
No information of his death exists: historians date his death to 112 AD simply because no letters of his have been found after that date.
