Why he might be annoying
He spent two weeks in jail for vagrancy (1958).
He dropped out of Ohio State after not being named editor-in-chief of the college newspaper.
He got into an argument with Bob Dylan that ended with Dylan throwing him out of a car (1965).
He would alternate taking tranquilizers to calm his nerves followed by amphetamines to get going for concerts.
He was manic depressive.
He hanged himself at his sister's house.
Why he might not be annoying
Early in their careers, Dylan said, 'I just can't keep up with Phil. And he's getting better and better and better.'
He and Dylan reconciled at a memorial concert for Salvador Allende.
His vocal cords were damaged during a mugging in Africa (1973).
The FBI kept a 500 page file on him.
The FBI frequently misspelled his name as 'Oakes' in his files and kept collecting information for months after his suicide before realizing he had died.
In 'Outside of a Small Circle of Friends' he declared, 'Smoking marijuana is more fun than drinking beer.'
